Published in aid of the Maseru branch of the Victoria League. Basutoland, now known as Lesotho, was established as a British colony in South Africa in 1884, and finally achieved independence in 1966. Replete with ads for local British-owned businesses, and with recipes from home as well as incorporating ingredients and foods of the country: Bengal mince, Colonial chutney, green mealies in winter ("given to Lady MacGregor by a Mosotho woman in Leribe"), real Cape curry, South African baked fish, tomato bredee (a mutton dish), etc. A 6-page appendix on the Cookery Methods of the Basuto by Dr. H.W. Dyke appears in rear, with a lengthy description of Basuto dishes and beverages, followed by several recipes, including joalla: keffir beer, seqhaqhabola: sour mealie meal porridge, senkhoana sa mabele: a kind of bread or dumpling made from unripened corn, etc. Sunning to spine and part of rear wrapper, else very good and solid - scarce.
