Max Baer 8/18/37" Baer was the World Heavyweight Champion from 1934-35. His fights were twice (1933 win over Max Schmeling, 1935 loss to James J. Braddock) rated Fight of the Year by The Ring Magazine. He wound up living in the San Francisco area because his father, Jacob Baer, tired of the Durango, Colorado winters, which aggravated hi family's health, so they drove to the milder climes of the West Coast.
