2 vols. in 1. xvi, 400, [4], 256 pp. Notes on astrology by E. Sibly, M.D. Illus. with 29 copper-engraved plates of approximately 450 different medicinal plants, as well as two frontispieces. 10.25x8", period tree calf, raised bands, morocco spine label, gilt-tooled cover edges, marbled endpapers. Fourteenth Edition (improved with the addition of the Linnaean names of each herb, plant and tree), London: J. Adlard, 1810.

Nicholas Culpeper was a seventeenth-century English botanist, herbalist, physician, and astrologer. First published in 1653 as a practical health guide, The Complete Herbal is still the most complete and definitive herbal available today. It contains a rich store of pharmaceutical and herbal knowledge, including herbs and where to find them, herb preparation, plasters, remedies, and much more. This is a lovely copy, with the owner's name, occupation, place and date (Uriah Gillard, veterinary surgeon, Herefordshire, June 26, 1809) to an early flyleaf. This must have been an early copy of this edition, since the publishing date is 1810.
