(Kansas) Ladies Aid Society of the Presbyterian Church. The Sunflower Cook Book: Favorite Recipes of the Presbyterian Ladies and their Friends.
132 pp. Illus. with ads for local businesses. Half cloth & marbled boards. Revised Edition. Columbus, KS: Presbyterian Church, 1906.
First published in 1895, the revised edition contains more recipes by congregants, including corn meal griddle cakes, pumpkin pie, watermelon cake, gooseberry catsup, pickled peaches, broiled oysters, hamburg steak, chicken for a picnic, etc. Most wonderfully, there are numerous period manuscript recipes mounted on endpapers and memo pages, as well as loose (along with other period food ephemera). The handwriting varies, so these are from a diverse group of contributors - all are legible. In addition, ads for local businesses around Columbus give the reader a picture of Kansas at the turn-of-the-century. Very good.
