Manuscript Cookbook.

60  pages of recipes neatly written in ink. Red leather covered diary stamped with Excelsior Diary, for the year 1922.

The Excelsior Diary was first created in the late 1800s and each edition contained pages at the front and back that include yearly calendar, eclipses, money conversions, stock rates, calendars tracking the moon rises, tides, etc. There was a page for each date of the year, and in this instance the owner used it as a cookbook, creating an alphabetically organized index out of the first six pages. Replete with recipes for baked goods and desserts like Turkish cake, Boston brown bread, old Fashioned Gingerbread, and Frozen Cocoanut Custard. Several recipes include cost-to-make; and a corn beef brine and cure for small pox are interspersed between recipes. A built-in pocket contains a few clipped recipes and handwritten instructions for rhubarb wine. Faint rubbing to spine, fine.
