(*NEW ARRIVAL*) (Champagne) Vizetelly, Henry. Facts About Champagne and Other Sparkling Wines, Collected During Numerous Visits to the Champagne and Other Viticultural Districts of France.

Illus. with wood engravings and also with numerous ads for Champagnes. 7x4.25", original gilt-dec. & lettered maroon cloth laid-on to later cloth binding. First Edition. London: Ward, Locke, 1879.

Henry Vizetelly (1820-1894) had an extensive knowledge of wine, which earned him a role of wine juror at the Vienna and Paris wine exhibitions in 1873 and 1878. In 1879, he produced this remarkable work that traces the history of Champagne and its wine over 1800 years. His History of Champagne - an larger, expanded edition of this earlier work - became one of the most famous books published on the subject. One errata slip tipped-in (between pages 224 & 225). While the later cloth binding and endpapers are not original, the binder has done everything they could to preserve the original decorated cloth on spine and front cover. Two-inch closed tear to frontis. illustrations, very old, darkened tape to lower edge of title page (just affecting publication date), otherwise, a very good copy of this scarce book.
