(*NEW ARRIVAL) (Food History) Dorothy Hartley. The Land of England: English Country Customs through the Ages
$60.00
/
Illus. Jacket. First Edition. London: Macdonald General Books, [1979].
Hartley's book Food of England is considered to be the authoratative book on the subject. According to Carolyn Finlay, "The lost practices of living 'on the land' - or travelling the land, or farming the land - are described by Dorothy Hartley from early times of settlement through to the 19th century.
She was a doctor's daughter, and she accompanied him from quite young on his visits out to patients in his pony and trap.
The many and varied ways and means of husbandry and harvest are detailed and fascinating, and the different ways of cooking and preserving food are seen to be changeable throughout the country."
Rubber stamp to front free endpaper. Near fine.
