Brown (1904-1964) was one of the first chefs to advocate using fresh produce and promoting California cuisine. In her classic West Coast Cook Book, she presents recipes for Blue Fox gnocchi (Blue Fox was a famous restaurant in San Francisco), West Coast fish curry, figs Fresno, sour cream date pie, frogs legs Castellar, hangtown fry, baked Sierra trout, etc. Her recipes often refer to the California town or county they are from, with historical references included.
