Full title: "A Practical Chemist". A Treatise on the Manufacture, Imitation, Adulteration, and Reduction of Foreign Wines, Brandies, Gins, Rums, etc. etc. Including "Old Rye" Whiskey, "Old Rye Monongahela," "Wheat," and "Bourbon" Whiskeys, Fancy Brandies, Cordials, and Domestic Liquors. 208 pp. Gilt-lettered cloth. First Edition. Philadelphia: Published for the Author, 1860.
Published during the Civil War, this was written to offset the poisonous adulteration of liquors that was prevalent. It was designed to assist wine and liquor merchants and manufacturers in the "arts and mysteries" of imitating and reducing pure foreign brandies, wines, etc. according to the French system of manufacture, with chapters on whiskey, bourbon, rum, wine, brandy, etc. Pieces of cloth lacking from spine at ends, and cloth repaired along middle of spine. Rubbing to covers and corners, thus good only, but quite scarce.
