Andre Simon was a genius when it came to anything culinary; the breadth of his encyclopedic knowledge on food and wine is incomparable. Here he sets out to tell the history of food through the lens of chefs and cooks, dinners and diners, memorable meals, bread, meat, fish and vegetables. His most expansive chapter, however, is about birds - he wrote an entire book on the subject of birds and their eggs a few years earlier, and it's a subject that clearly captivated his imagination.
