287 pp. Profusely illus. with drawings & climate maps. 8.5x5.25", cream wrappers. Headquarters: Dept. of the Army, 1970.
A fantasically thorough guide for surviving in the wilderness during a military snafu. All climates are considered, with special emphasis on surviving in the desert, the jungle, and the icy north. Foraging and cooking are major elements, with identification of edible plants and animals, avoidance of poisonous types, and how to get water from unusual sources (like palm trunks).
There are visusal lessons in how to crack a coconut, build a fire make a tourniquet, obtain water from a cactus barel, etc. Also included of course are sections on clothing, navigation, and health, but the main focus here is on food - how to find it, how to eat it, and how to not die.
A few smudges and spots to covers, else very good - a fascinating portrait of what it's like to be lost in the wilderness during wartime, and published in the midst of the U.S. war with Vietnam.
