(*NEW ARRIVAL*) (San Francisco) Old Poodle Dog Hotel and Restaurant. Blank Menu

$45.00

1 pictorial page, never folded. 5.5x8". San Francisco: Old Poodle Dog, c.1900.

This is a blank menu, with only the cover printed. The address is 824-826 Eddy St., where the restaurant moved in 1898. The 6-floor building was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake. According to journalist Susana Guerrero, "Within the dining space was a hidden passage that led powerful men to a secret elevator lift and up to private rooms on the third, fourth and fifth floors. It was there where they had evening trysts with sex workers who entertained the members of the city elite. Just before the privileged men exited the elevators, they would turn to the lift operator, look them dead in the eye and place a polished coin in his hand as their unspoken treaty to keep things hush-hush."

Because the restaurant was located on Eddy Street for just 8 years, any menu from that space is rare. Fine.
