Inscribed & SIGNED by Bowers on the front free endpaper, to Mrs. George J. Thomas. Bowers, whose portrait appears on the rear jacket flap, was born the granddaughter of slaves, and graduated from Claflin College in Orangeburg, SC. After moving to Bronxville, NY, she opened The Virginian, which became a popular restaurant in Westchester County. The front jacket flap copy is all quotes of recommendations about the restaurant and Bowers' cooking. Trained as a dietician, she presents classic Southern recipes here, such as Virginian Holiday Pie, mint julep, country-style baked beans, blueberry griddle cakes, crackling corn bread, popovers a la Virginian, ham hock with turnip greens, etc. Her book is listed in Toni Tipton-Martin's The Jemima Code. Mild chipping to jacket spine head, otherwise very good and bright.
