Les Délices d'Edo: Histoire illustrée de la Gastronomie Japonaise (Brigitte Koyama-Richard)
In French.
A sumptuous illustrated history of Japanese gastronomy, featuring 100 prints by both the greatest masters of the genre and anonymous artists. Scenes of fishing and gathering, as well as banquets and restaurants, gastronomy has often been depicted in prints since the Edo period (between the 17th and mid-18th centuries).
7 main sections: first, Edo, the capital of Japanese gastronomy, then the riches of the sea, the products of the land, drinks, and desserts. Finally, the places where food is consumed in Edo and the rest of Japan, and finally, festive meals throughout the seasons. The conclusion is devoted to the Meiji era, with the opening of Japan to the West.
Appendices offer a gastronomic glossary, taste onomatopoeia, as well as a complementary bibliography and major chronological references.
