Mahalia Jackson (1911-1972) was the most famous American gospel singer of her day. Born in New Orleans, she moved to Chicago, where she was referred to as the "Queen of Gospel," she was heralded internationally as a singer and civil rights activist. " I sing God's music because it makes me feel free", Jackson once said about her choice of gospel, adding, " It gives me hope. With the blues, when you finish, you still have the blues." Her Aunt Duke taught her how to cook soul food, and was one of the great influences in her life.
