$75.00

399 pp. Illus. with numerous photographs. Gilt-lettered and dec. olive cloth. Second Edition. San Francisco: A.M. Robertson, 1914.

Dr John Hays McLaren (1846–1943) served as superintendent of the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco for 56 years, starting in 1887. He was friends with John Muir, and dedicated his life to the vigorous advocacy and development of the 1,017-acre Golden Gate Park, one of the largest public parks in the world, using considerable political skill in addition to his remarkable gardening skill. The western half of the park was mainly sand dunes when McLaren began his work, presenting him a unique challenge in developing plantings that would flourish in a difficult environment.

Near fine - a beautiful copy of a scarce book.
