Gilt-lettered pebbled brown cloth, bevelled edges. First Edition. Chicago: Eliza Pitkin, 1880.

A scarce 19th century cookbook for invalids, with practical tips for the sick-room, as well as recipes for broths, pap, soups, lemonades (including an intriguing "Irish moss lemonade"), gruels, infants' foods, essences, and drinks (many alcoholic cocktails included!). Lovely inscription to front free endpaper. Bookplate to front free endpaper, and Library of Congress rubberstamp to title page. Near fine, with just a small black spot on spine - a beautiful copy.
