After being lauded by food writer Calvin Trillin for his ability to translate Chinese menus, James McCawley authored a book for non-Chinese-speaking eaters to guide them through the menus of Chinese restaurants in New York, San Francisco, and beyond. The book "shows how Chinese characters are written and referred to, both in script and type, provides a guide to pronunciation, and includes helpful exercises to practice ordering. Most important for the diner, it includes sample menus from notable Chinese restaurants around the world and an extensive glossary of characters, ranging from such basics as 'rice' and 'fish' to exotica like 'Buddha Jumps Wall.'"
