(*NEW ARRIVAL*) (Servants) Mrs. L. Seely. Mrs. Seely's Cook Book: A Manual of French and American Cookery with chapters on Domestic Servants...

$250.00

Their Rights and Duties and many other details of Household Management. Illus. with numerous photographic plates. Dec. cloth. NY: Grosset & Dunlap, [1908].

A fascinating portrait of domestic service pre-WWI, with duties and expectations precisely laid out, including advice on behavior, as well as rights and laws in the favor of servants. Illustrations of proper dress for each job (valet, chambermaid on the street vs. in house, etc.). Cookery and laying the table are also described in depth.

Best piece of advice: "Don't spy on your masters and mistresses - the fact that their bread is in your mouth should be a reason for keeping it shut."

Cloth rubbed along hinges, old ring mark to rear cover (from laying on a stove ring); owner's name to upper front free endpaper, else very good, in a beautiful period binding reminiscent of Walter Crane.
